The maker behind the thing

A pot, mug or piece of glass can be bought as an anonymous object.

Locally, it may have come from somebody's workshop a few streets away: a person earning a living through the things they make, the skills they teach and the commissions they take on.

Understead makes that person easier to find, because knowing who makes things around you is part of knowing your place.

What grows when you buy locally

A maker, jeweller, blacksmith or craft workshop is more than another place to buy something.

These businesses create work, keep practical skills alive, give smaller makers somewhere to sell and keep more economic activity connected to the places where things are actually made.

But the independent maker rarely has the advertising budget, search authority or convenience infrastructure of a chain or national platform.

Understead is trying to narrow that gap, not by asking people to buy locally out of guilt, but by making local options easier to see and easier to use.

Find the people making around you. Buy from them when it works for you. Help keep more of the economy of your place rooted there.

What do they make?

Work is labelled from what each maker explicitly describes: style labels are never invented.

Looking for something made?

Some independent makers sell finished work. Others work mainly to commission: tableware, tiles, decorative pieces, memorial pieces, stained and bespoke glasswork where makers offer it.

Where a maker accepts commissions, Understead shows the maker's own commission information and keeps the enquiry route direct. Not every maker takes commissions: their own listing says.

The platform helps you find the maker. The relationship stays between you and them.

Want to try it yourself?

Many potters and makers also run classes or workshops. If a business teaches, follow its Classes & Activities listing to see current sessions, prices and venues.

What does it cost?

Maker goods vary too much for one broad category price range, so none is invented. Where makers publish current product examples or commission starting points, Understead shows them; workshop prices live with the Classes listings.

Quick answers

How many ceramics & glass makers are there in the UK?

424 ceramics & glass makers currently list on Understead, and more are added each week. Around 96 are near Greater London. Search by postcode to find the makers closest to you and buy from them directly.

Why does handmade pottery cost more than shop pottery?

Because a person made it, not a machine. Each piece is thrown, trimmed, glazed and fired by hand, in small batches, by someone who spent years learning how, where a factory presses out thousands a day. It's differently priced, not overpriced: a good stoneware mug lasts decades, so the cost per use is often lower than replacing cheap ones that chip within a year.

Is handmade pottery safe to eat and drink from?

Reputable potters use food-safe, lead-free glazes and high firing, so their tableware is made to be used daily. The things to check are decorative or antique pieces, which may never have been meant for food, and any damage to the glaze. If in doubt, ask the maker, they'll know exactly what their glazes are rated for.

Can I put handmade ceramics in the dishwasher?

Often yes, well-made, high-fired stoneware and porcelain usually cope fine. But it depends on the clay and glaze, so follow the maker's advice, and always handwash pieces with gold or metallic detail. For a treasured piece, handwashing simply keeps it looking better for longer.

What do the marks and variations on a handmade piece mean?

They mean a human made it. Slight differences in shape, glaze pooling, the swirl of a thrown wall, a mark on the base, these are the record of the making, not defects. Two pieces from the same potter will never be quite identical, which is exactly what a moulded factory piece can never give you.

Can I commission a piece?

Usually, yes, it's one of the best reasons to buy local. Many potters and glassmakers take commissions: a full dinner set, a wedding gift, a mug with a name on it, a piece sized for a particular spot. You work it out with the maker directly, and end up with something no one else has.
