The local butcher or fishmonger is not a quaint extra.
It is a working independent business, a route to smaller suppliers and one more part of the weekly shop that does not have to pass through a national chain.
These businesses survive when enough people can find them and when using them is practical.
Understead's job is to make that practical choice visible.
A farm shop, butcher, grower or dairy is more than another place to buy something.
These businesses create work, keep practical skills alive, give smaller producers somewhere to sell and keep more economic activity connected to the places where the food is actually grown and made.
But the independent producer rarely has the advertising budget, search authority or convenience infrastructure of a supermarket or national platform.
Understead is trying to narrow that gap, not by asking people to shop locally out of guilt, but by making local options easier to see and easier to use.
Find the people producing around you. Buy from them when it works for you. Help keep more of the economy of your place rooted there.
Local butchers with opening information, meat types, sourcing statements, meat boxes, delivery and trade supply where the business publishes them: halal and game only where explicitly stated.
Local fishmongers selling fresh fish and shellfish, with opening, sourcing, preparation and delivery information where the business publishes it.
Farm-gate eggs, honesty boxes and farm shops selling local eggs: free-range only where the producer genuinely states it.
Options are labelled from what each business explicitly advertises.
Sometimes. Sometimes not.
Price depends on the cut, quantity, provenance and business. Supermarkets may be cheaper on some products; an independent butcher may compete well on others, especially larger quantities, boxes or less standard cuts.
Understead does not tell you local is automatically cheaper. Where businesses publish current prices, we show them so you can compare the actual offer.
Some local butchers, farms and seafood businesses also supply trade. Look for wholesale availability or post a supply request for the products, quantities and frequency you need.
Local does not automatically mean cheaper, or more expensive. Prices vary by product, quantity, season and business. Where producers publish current prices, Understead shows them so you can compare the real offer rather than rely on assumptions.
If you're one of the independent businesses producing or selling this locally, Understead is meant to include you.
Add your business or claim the page we've already started. Show people what you produce, where to find it, when you're open and how to buy directly from you.
Your visibility here should come from what you do and where you do it, not from how much you're prepared to pay to rank above somebody else.
Your own website, socials, contact details and ways to buy stay visible.

Ask the farmer or butcher three things: the breed, whether it was grass-fed and pasture-raised, and how long it was hung, hanging is where flavour and tenderness develop. Then be brave with cuts. The cheaper ones, shin, shoulder, brisket, reward slow cooking and often taste better than an expensive steak. A good butcher will tell you how to cook whatever you buy.
A small flock that genuinely ranges eats a varied diet, grass, bugs, scraps, which gives deep-orange yolks and fuller flavour, and the eggs reach you days rather than weeks from the hen. "Free-range" on a supermarket box can still mean a very large shed. The local version is usually the real thing, and you can go and see the birds if you doubt it.
It can be, but "local" alone isn't the guarantee, how it's caught matters more. Line-caught, pots and traps, and small day boats do far less harm than heavy trawling. Small oily fish like mackerel, herring and sardines are among the most sustainable and least expensive. The best move is to ask the fisher what's landed today and how, and to try the underused species instead of only cod and salmon.
Often, and the reason is transparency. A small farm can tell you exactly how its animals lived and died, pasture, breed, a short last journey to a nearby abattoir, which longer, more industrial supply chains can't. "Local" isn't automatically higher-welfare, but you're buying from the person who'd know, and can ask. That's more than a supermarket tray offers.
Keep meat cold at the bottom of the fridge and use or freeze it by its date, it freezes well. Eggs last weeks; a fresh one sinks in water. Fish is the exception: keep it cold and eat it within a day or two, or freeze it the day you buy it. Bought frozen-at-sea, fish can be fresher than "fresh".
Some farms sell a box, a mixed selection of cuts, or a whole or half animal for your freezer. It's cheaper per kilo, it means the whole animal gets used rather than just the prime cuts, and it gives the farmer a guaranteed sale. You'll get cuts you'd never pick in a shop, and a freezer that feeds you for months.
