What you can join around Brighton · Everything local in Brighton
Meets: Monthly on Tuesday afternoons 2:00 pm-3:30 pm 3rd Tuesday of the month
Where: Kemp Town Crypt – Kemp Hall, Brighton
The course looks at free standing sculpture, architectural sculpture and vase painting produced during the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods of Greece, and at artworks from Republican and Imperial Rome, working in a reasonably in depth yet relaxed way with the emphasis on beholding beautiful objects and being filled with joy at the sight of them. The architecture of temples, houses and public spaces is also considered. Each monthly session at the Kemp Town Crypt starts with a well illustrated presentation of 30 to 45 minutes, including a short special focus on a relevant topic of science, technology or engineering such as carving marble, lost wax casting or ancient cranes, followed by discussion and a 15 minute mosaic moment for the appreciation of an ancient mosaic. Pointers for individual research at home are offered at the end of each session, and visits to London or Cambridge museums could extend the learning if participants wish.
