Fruit and vegetables are easy to experience as anonymous supermarket products. But somebody grew them somewhere.
Finding the grower makes that connection visible again, and gives smaller farms and market gardens a direct route to the people living around them.
A place that can still grow and sell some of its own food retains skills, businesses and productive land that are very difficult to recreate once they're gone.
A farm shop, butcher, grower or dairy is more than another place to buy something.
These businesses create work, keep practical skills alive, give smaller producers somewhere to sell and keep more economic activity connected to the places where the food is actually grown and made.
But the independent producer rarely has the advertising budget, search authority or convenience infrastructure of a supermarket or national platform.
Understead is trying to narrow that gap, not by asking people to shop locally out of guilt, but by making local options easier to see and easier to use.
Find the people producing around you. Buy from them when it works for you. Help keep more of the economy of your place rooted there.
Routes appear only where local businesses actually offer them.

Find growers and local businesses offering regular or one-off fruit and vegetable boxes, with delivery and collection information where published.
Local does not automatically mean cheaper, or more expensive. Prices vary by product, quantity, season and business. Where producers publish current prices, Understead shows them so you can compare the real offer rather than rely on assumptions.
Farm shops are destinations in their own right, selling across many local producers at once.
If you're one of the independent businesses producing or selling this locally, Understead is meant to include you.
Add your business or claim the page we've already started. Show people what you produce, where to find it, when you're open and how to buy directly from you.
Your visibility here should come from what you do and where you do it, not from how much you're prepared to pay to rank above somebody else.
Your own website, socials, contact details and ways to buy stay visible.

Two reasons. Supermarkets choose varieties that travel and store well, often at the cost of flavour, and pick them before they're ripe. A local grower picks ripe, sells within days, and can grow kinds bred purely for taste. Fresher, riper, and chosen for the plate rather than the lorry, that's the difference you taste.
In season means a crop is being harvested locally at its natural time, rather than forced under glass or flown across the world. In season, it's riper, cheaper, more plentiful, and at its peak for flavour and nutrition. What's in season depends on where you live and the month, so the best guide is simply what your local growers have this week.
Keep leafy greens and salad cold and slightly damp in the fridge, and roots somewhere cool and dark, where they'll last weeks. Keep tomatoes at room temperature so they hold their flavour, and leave berries unwashed until you eat them. Stand soft herbs in a little water like cut flowers. Buy closer to when you'll cook, and waste less.
Often, yes. Many nutrients, vitamin C among them, start to fade from the moment produce is picked, and fade faster with time, light and long storage. Produce picked ripe and eaten within days holds on to more of them than produce picked early and shipped a long way. Eat a range, eat it fresh, and buy it close to home.
Often, but the honest answer is: you can ask. Small growers tend to use fewer sprays than large-scale operations, and many grow organically or close to it, though "local" alone isn't a guarantee. The real advantage is transparency. You can ask the person who grew your food exactly what went on it, which is more than any supermarket shelf will tell you.
Many growers sell a veg box: a weekly bag or crate of whatever they've just harvested, collected or delivered. Others sell at markets, farm shops, at the gate, or direct from their listing here. A box is the easy way to eat with the season without deciding; buying direct lets you pick exactly what you want. Either keeps you close to the grower.
There is more being grown and made around you than you might think.
