Candles and soaps are easy to encounter as anonymous gift products.
Locally, they may be made by somebody running a one-person business from a workshop or home studio and selling through a handful of markets and independent shops.
Understead keeps the person behind the product visible, and helps residents find where that work can actually be bought.
A maker, jeweller, blacksmith or craft workshop is more than another place to buy something.
These businesses create work, keep practical skills alive, give smaller makers somewhere to sell and keep more economic activity connected to the places where things are actually made.
But the independent maker rarely has the advertising budget, search authority or convenience infrastructure of a chain or national platform.
Understead is trying to narrow that gap, not by asking people to buy locally out of guilt, but by making local options easier to see and easier to use.
Find the people making around you. Buy from them when it works for you. Help keep more of the economy of your place rooted there.
Products appear only where local makers explicitly sell them.

These makers explicitly sell directly, from a studio, shop or their own online store.
These makers explicitly name the independent shops that stock their work.
These makers explicitly sell at markets and craft fairs: their listing says where to find them next.
Maker goods and services vary too much for one broad category price range, so none is invented. Where a business publishes current prices, examples or starting points, Understead shows them; otherwise, contact them directly.
If you're one of the independent people making things locally, Understead is meant to include you.
Add your business or claim the page we've already started. Show what you make, where people can buy it, whether you take commissions and how they can contact you.
Your place here comes from what you do and where you do it, not from buying better visibility.

Honestly, the health difference is overstated. No candle wax has been shown to be harmful in normal use, and how cleanly a candle burns depends more on the wick, the fragrance and good ventilation than on the wax. Where soy, rapeseed and beeswax do win is that they're renewable, biodegradable and often burn a little longer with less soot. Choose them for that, and for the scent, not out of fear.
It's a catch-all: "fragrance" or "parfum" can stand for many undisclosed ingredients, which is why sensitive people sometimes react without knowing to what. Neither synthetic fragrance oils nor essential oils are automatically "safe", both can irritate, and some essential oils aren't suitable around pets or in pregnancy. The advantage of a small maker is simple: they can tell you exactly what's in it.
Real soap is made by turning oils and butters into soap, a process that also creates glycerin, a natural moisturiser that handmade soap keeps and many mass-produced bars remove. A lot of supermarket "soap" is actually a synthetic detergent bar. Handmade soap tends to have a short list of real ingredients you can check, though if your skin is sensitive it's still worth a patch test, as any soap can carry a fragrance that doesn't suit you.
Two things. On the first burn, let it melt all the way to the edges, an hour or two, so it doesn't tunnel down the middle. And trim the wick to about 5mm each time before lighting, which cuts smoke and soot. Keep it out of draughts, never leave it unattended, and stop burning when a centimetre or two of wax remains.
Usually, yes, it's a real advantage of buying from a person. Many makers offer unscented options, will steer you to gentler ingredients if your skin reacts, and can make something to your taste for a gift. Just ask; a small maker would far rather get it right for you than sell you something that doesn't suit.
