Creative work is often discovered through global platforms long after the artist's own town has stopped knowing they are there.
Understead works in the opposite direction.
It makes the artist, framer and independent shop visible in the place where they actually work.
Knowing who creates things around you is part of knowing what kind of place you live in.
A maker, jeweller, blacksmith or craft workshop is more than another place to buy something.
These businesses create work, keep practical skills alive, give smaller makers somewhere to sell and keep more economic activity connected to the places where things are actually made.
But the independent maker rarely has the advertising budget, search authority or convenience infrastructure of a chain or national platform.
Understead is trying to narrow that gap, not by asking people to buy locally out of guilt, but by making local options easier to see and easier to use.
Find the people making around you. Buy from them when it works for you. Help keep more of the economy of your place rooted there.
Independent artists, illustrators and printmakers: work available direct and commissions where the artist offers them.
Find independent framers offering framing for artwork, prints, photographs and other pieces: bespoke, conservation and mounting work where the business offers it.
Independent art-material shops enabling the same creative local ecosystem: materials, specialist supplies and workshops where offered.
Genuinely independent stationery shops, paper goods, cards and locally made stationery.
Work is labelled from what each business explicitly describes.
Prints (156) Cards & paper goods (54) Sculpture (222) Commissions (163)
Some independent artists and illustrators take commissions. Where they do, Understead keeps the enquiry direct between the resident and the artist.
The platform helps you find the person. The relationship stays between you and them.
Where artists teach, their Classes & Activities listing shows current sessions, courses and prices.
Maker goods and services vary too much for one broad category price range, so none is invented. Where a business publishes current prices, examples or starting points, Understead shows them; otherwise, contact them directly.
The class side has its own pages of local teachers and workshops.
If you're one of the independent people making things locally, Understead is meant to include you.
Add your business or claim the page we've already started. Show what you make, where people can buy it, whether you take commissions and how they can contact you.
Your place here comes from what you do and where you do it, not from buying better visibility.
Your own website, socials, contact details and ways to buy stay visible.

An original is one-of-a-kind, a painting, drawing or collage made by the artist's hand. A hand-pulled print (linocut, etching, screenprint) is also original: the artist makes the image in the print medium and pulls a limited, signed, numbered edition. A reproduction, a giclée or "art print", is a copy of an existing work, printed in larger or unlimited numbers. All three are worth owning; just know which one you've got.
A hand-pulled print absolutely is, a linocut or etching is an original artwork made in the print medium, not a copy of anything. A reproduction (a giclée or poster of a painting) is decor rather than an original, which is completely fine as long as it's priced like one. The thing to watch is a reproduction dressed up, and priced, as if it were a hand-pulled edition.
Ask, and a good artist or gallery will tell you plainly: is it original or a reproduction? if a print, is it hand-pulled or a copy? what's the edition size, and is it signed and numbered? "One of thirty, signed" means something; "available in any quantity" means a poster. Clear answers are a good sign; vague ones are worth pausing on.
Yes, and it's one of the loveliest things to do with a local artist. A portrait, a pet, your house, a landscape that means something to you, you talk it through, they make it, and you end up with a one-of-a-kind piece with a story attached. Many artists take commissions at a range of prices; just ask.
Frame it behind glass, UV-protective if you can, with an acid-free mount, and hang it out of direct sunlight, which fades colours over the years. Kept dry, framed and out of strong light, an original or a good archival print lasts generations. A framer will set it up properly, and the artist can usually recommend one.
