Urban Mushrooms YMCA
Urban Mushrooms is a social enterprise of YMCA Newcastle, growing speciality oyster mushrooms on an urban farm in the heart of the city centre. A young team collects used coffee grounds from local coffee shops, pasteurises them, mixes in recycled cardboard and mushroom spawn, and lets the mycelium do its work until the logs fruit. The mushrooms are sold to restaurants and cafes across Newcastle, and the enterprise offers volunteering and apprenticeship opportunities for local young people.
